Built it. Ran it. Still running.
A 30,000 gallon-per-day LNG liquefaction plant on 11 acres near the Mississippi River, from conceptual design through eight-plus years of continuous production.
The challenge
In 2016 the team behind NuBlu set out to commercialize a new feed gas refrigerant liquefaction cycle at commercial scale and to prove that a micro-scale LNG plant could be built and run profitably on a merchant basis. That meant process development, owner's engineering, procurement and construction on one site, under PHMSA and DOT jurisdiction, with marine and utility customers waiting on product.
What we delivered
- Conceptual design (2016), preliminary and detailed engineering (2016 to 2017) and construction completed December 2017, commissioning January 2018
- 30,000 GPD (50 TPD) liquefaction on the mLNG feed gas cycle, with gas cleanup, compression, liquefier, 100,000 gallons of LNG storage, pump skid, regas unit, truck scale and loadout
- PHMSA and DOT construction audit completed successfully
- FTA export license received June 2018
- 2019 to 2020 brownfield upgrade of the dehydration unit to UOP SepraSIV molecular sieve technology to eliminate benzene freeze-up ($1MM turnkey EPC)
- Sold to Stabilis in 2021 after years of stable operation; the plant is still producing

What this means for you
Port Allen is why NuBlu's LNG offering is more than a drawing. The feed gas refrigerant cycle, the modular pretreatment and the boil-off management proven there are embedded in today's mLNG platform and carried into the NuCryo µSMR and the NuPresto LNG designs. When we size a micro-scale plant for your gas, the lessons come from a plant we built and ran ourselves.
